Rabies case confirmed in Gaston County

Gaston County officials say a caller reported their dog killed a raccoon. That raccoon tested positive for rabies.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — On Saturday, April 14, the Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement Division received a call, in which a person reported their dog killed a raccoon.

The call came from a citizen in the area of the 800 block of Unity Church Road.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated, impounded the raccoon, and processed the raccoon for rabies testing.

The raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh and tested positive for rabies.

The Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists started canvassing the area where the animal was located, advising residents and verifying pet rabies vaccinations.

Officials stressed the importance of valid rabies vaccinations for all pets, both for the pets' health and safety as well as the health and safety of the community.
