CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A shocking fight between a teacher and a student was caught on camera in Charlotte.
Students said the brawl happened Monday morning at South Mecklenburg High School. The video showed the fight spilling into the hallway after an argument inside the classroom.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told NBC Charlotte that Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Police were investigating. However, CMS did not have any comment about the fight.
The video tweeted to NBC Charlotte appeared to show the student yelling at the teacher and calling her derogatory names. Moments later, it looks like the teacher took the student's backpack, and that’s when the situation escalated into violence.
“The teacher and the student got in a fight, there’s kind of small talk going around about it, and it’s like, ‘Oh wow, that’s crazy,'” said South Mecklenburg freshman Cade Watrous.
NBC Charlotte showed the video to a parent who asked that his face not be shown. In the video, you could hear loud voices and even laughter in the background as the fight spilled into the hallway.
“The sad thing about that is they’re laughing. That’s the mentality these kids have. It’s funny. How is that funny?,” said the father.
“I don’t think it was right on either one of them; I think the situation could have been handled better,” said Watrous.
This is the latest fight breaking out at a local school. In December, NBC Charlotte reported on a brawl at West Mecklenburg High School that led to at least six students charged. In another video, a student was seen body slamming another student at South Point High School in Rock Hill.
Parents said they can only do so much.
“It’s disturbing, but I don’t know what to do about it, other than to educate my daughter to be safe,” said a parent.
Students said they’re doing what they can to stay away out of trouble.
“I wouldn’t get into that position with my teachers,” said Watrous.
The teacher’s name had not been released as of 9 p.m. There was also no word on whether anyone would be charged.
