Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson speaks on incident that landed him in hospital after Mount Airy event

So far, details about what happened remained scarce.

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — At a campaign event Saturday, North Carolina Leuitenant Governor Mark Robinson provided clarity on the incident that landed him in the hospital Friday.

Robinson told supporters he rode in a "big rig" truck during a parade at his campaign event in Mount Airy on Friday, and while trying to exit the vehicle, he placed his left hand on one of the truck's exhaust pipes, causing the burns.

"I was getting out of the truck and all the fans and supporters was coming around the truck. I was trying to get out of the truck without running into them, and doggone if I didn’t lay my hand on that exhaust pipe," Robinson said. "If you ever have a steak or a pork chop or some bacon you want to fry, go and find you a truck exhaust. That thing was hot.”

Friday night, a source within Mark Robinson's campaign confirmed that Robinson was hospitalized after an incident at a campaign event in Mount Airy on Friday, Sept. 27.

"This evening following an incident at a campaign appearance at the Mayberry Truck Show in Mt. Airy, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson was treated at Northern Regional Hospital for second-degree burns. He is in good spirits, appreciates the outpouring of well wishes, and is excited to return to the campaign trail as scheduled first thing tomorrow morning," said Mike Lonergan the Communications Director with the Robinson campaign.

This incident comes about a week after CNN's report that claimed Robinson referred to himself as a "black NAZI" and made dozens of sexual and racist comments on a pornography forum.

Five staff members, including the top aide for the lieutenant governor, have resigned since the news broke.
