Driver charged with DWI after taking out light pole, traffic lights

A busy road in University City is shut down after police said a drunk driver crashed into a pole, knocking down power lines and traffic lights early Friday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A busy road in University City was shut down for hours after an accused drunk driver crashed into a pole, knocking down power lines and traffic lights early Friday.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to a 911 call of a crash on University City Boulevard at East Mallard Creek Church Road just before 2 a.m. Investigators said a vehicle with four people inside hit a pole. Three people were taken to CMC with minor injuries, police said.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Niadnre Rondell Woods, was arrested for DWI at the scene. He was also charged with reckless driving.

Duke Energy and Charlotte DOT responded to the scene to help make repairs. CMPD opened the inbound lanes of University City Boulevard just before 8 a.m.
