Five arrested in NC 9th District election fraud investigation

The charges stem from the 2016 election cycle and the 2018 primary. Allegations of illegal activity during last fall's election remain under investigation.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Following last week's indictment of political operative McCrae Dowless, four more people have been arrested and charged in the North Carolina 9th District election fraud investigation. 

The charges stem from the 2016 election cycle and the 2018 primary. Allegations of illegal activity during last fall's election remain under investigation.

Rebecca D. Thompson was arrested March 7 after turning herself in at the Bladen County Sheriff's Office. She was charged with conspiracy to commit felonious obstruction of justice and possession of absentee ballot.

Caitlyn Croom was arrested March 3 in New Hanover County. She was charged with conspiracy to commit felony obstruction of justice and possession of absentee ballot.

Tonia Marie Gordon was arrested on March 5 after turning herself in at the Magistrate’s Office in Bladen County. She was been charged with conspiracy to commit felonious obstruction of justice and possession of absentee ballot.

Later that night, Matthew Monroe Mathis was arrested in Sampson County by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office without incident.  He was charged with conspiracy to commit felonious obstruction of justice, possession of absentee ballot and falsely signing certification on absentee ballot.
