VERIFY: Campaign ad about Donald Trump's stance on IVF treatment is misleading

We are looking at a new ad that's running on TV claiming former president Donald Trump wants to get rid of IVF treatment.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As election season heats up, we continue to look at campaign ads and verify if they are true or false.

We are looking at a new ad that's running on TV claiming former president Donald Trump wants to get rid of IVF treatment. This ad was paid for by the Kamala Harris Campaign.

THE CLAIM:

Former President Donald Trump’s plan could effectively ban IVF in some states.

THE ANSWER:

This is misleading.

Though giving the option of abortion back to the states does open the door for questions surrounding IVF, former President Trump has come out multiple times for his support of IVF.

WHAT WE FOUND:

This claim stems from a decision made by the Alabama Supreme Court. In February, the court decided embryos created through IVF, should be considered children, and those who destroy them can be held liable for wrongful death.

A John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health article says the concern with reversing Roe v Wade is states could regulate life from the moment of conception, and that could lead to implications for IVF because the process of IVF creates embryos.

While Trump has taken full credit for reversing Roe v. Wade and giving the decision back to the states in the 2024 presidential debate, he stated that the Alabama ruling was a negative decision.

"I have been a leader on IVF, which is fertilization," Trump said. "I have been a leader. In fact, when the Alabama courts made a very negative decision on IVF, I saw the people of Alabama and the legislature vote it in. I have been a leader on it."

Alabama's Governor signed a new law that aims at protecting IVF patients and providers from legal liability.

At a campaign event in Potterville Michigan, Trump also said he wanted people to have access to IVF and for it to be covered.

"Under the Trump Administration, your government will pay for, or your insurance will be mandated to pay for all costs associated with IVF treatment," Trump said at a rally.

So you know any time a campaign pays for ad time we as a station are legally required to run it.
