What's going around: Hand-foot-and-mouth cases becoming common

This office is also seeing more allergies and asthma cases, especially with the nicer weather outside. Doctors are also seeing a spike in kids in with injuries from scooters, bikes and skateboards.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While counting down the days to the end of flu season, seasonal allergies continue to cause issues across the Carolinas. Additionally, something unusual is popping up in south Charlotte.

At Novant Health Waverly Pediatrics and Primary Care, something you don't hear about every day has become common -- hand-foot-and-mouth disease, which is caused by a virus.

The south Charlotte office says cases of HFMD are now common.

The virus causes blisters on the tongue with rash type bumps on hands, feet, face, and bottom are typical on areas affected. Because it's caused by a virus, no antibiotics are required.

This office is also seeing more allergies and asthma cases -- especially as everyone's enjoying the nicer weather outside. Doctors are also saying they're seeing a spike in patients coming in with head injuries, bumps and bruises as kids are outside on scooters, bikes and skateboards.

All children 16 years and younger should wear helmets, by law. Doctors agree everyone should wear a helmet to be safe.

Novant Health Pediatrics Highland Creek is also treating patients with HFMD. The doctors there say they're also seeing lost of stomach bug cases.

The stomach bug is hitting Novant Health Pediatrics SouthPark too.

The office says it's seeing several kids with stomach viruses sometimes with skin rashes lasting about three days.

There's also an uptick in treatment for allergies. Experts there say elevated allergy levels are causing kids with eczema and asthma to have some flare-ups.

Some good news on the flu front though -- cases are on the decline at this office and out in the University area at Novant Health Medical Plaza Pediatrics too.

The University area office also says it's doing more well-checks for kids getting ready for kindergarten as well as for older kids looking to taking part in different sports for school.
