CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There are plenty of talented sports teams in Charlotte, but not everyone can say they’re number one.
“You can’t just come out to practice and play soft, you have to put in work at home or at the field,” 10-year-old Matty Carroll said.
He’s a part of the SBA Futures 10U Baseball team. They’re the defending champions at the USSSA Elite World Series, and this weekend, they’re headed back to defend that title.
“We kind of went into that tournament as somebody that they didn’t know a lot about, and after we won the name started getting out there,” head coach Travis Thompson said.
But the team has lived up to the hype, and heads into the championship weekend ranked the number one ten and under team in the country.
“We can’t stop, because if we do then we’ll get passed up,” Eli Webb said.
But for this team, it’s not just about winning. The boys have played together for several years now, and that friendship is something that makes trips and opportunities like this a little more special.
“We just love playing baseball together and have fun playing with each other,” Webb said.
