CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Will Healy is the next head coach of the Charlotte 49ers football program.
A source confirmed to NBC Charlotte's Nick Carboni early Tuesday. An official news release was sent out later in the day.
There will be a news conference to introduce Healy on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
“I am very pleased to welcome Will and Emily Healy to the UNC Charlotte community,” said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Phil Dubois. “Will’s energy, coaching success, and passion for this job make him an excellent choice to lead the Charlotte 49er football program.”
Healy replaces Brad Lambert, who was fired by the school in November after six seasons.
The hire was first reported by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. Charlotte's coaching search reopened last Friday after athletic director Mike Hill withdrew an offer to Mike Houston, who accepted the head coaching position at East Carolina.
Healy, 33, was the head coach at Austin Peay in Tennessee from 2016-18. In 2017, he led the FCS program to one of its best seasons in history, finishing 8-4. His overall record was 13-21.
Healy also recruited the No. 1 class in FCS football following the 2016 season.
A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Healy played college football first at Air Force, before finishing at Richmond as a quarterback.
