CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the first time, Charlotte will host two bowl games this year, as the Bahamas Bowl will be played on the campus of UNC Charlotte, ESPN announced Thursday.
Ongoing renovations at Nassau's Thomas A. Robinson Stadium means the game with arguably the coolest destination in all of football will now be played in University City. The name of this year's game will be changed, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks, ESPN Events said.
As a result of the venue change, the 2023 Bahamas Bowl (as it's known for now) will be played on Monday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m. The Myrtle Beach Bowl will be moved to Saturday, Dec. 16. Both games will be televised on ESPN. Charlotte will also host the Duke's Mayo Bowl at Bank of America Stadium on Dec. 27.
“We appreciate the support and willingness of Charlotte and its administration, specifically Director of Athletics Mike Hill, to work with us on relocating this game to Jerry Richardson Stadium,” ESPN Events' Clint Overby said. “We are fortunate to have great partners who understand the importance of the college football postseason and the positive impact these games have on both student athletes and the participating programs.”
ESPN said it anticipates the Bahamas Bowl will return to Nassau in 2024 once renovations to the stadium are complete.
