CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte 49ers head coach Biff Poggi joined the discussion on the Michigan sign-stealing investigation that's dominated college football headlines recently, defending Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh against allegations that he was aware of the operation.
Poggi broke his silence on X, formerly known as Twitter, Friday afternoon.
"I have been quiet on the Michigan situation BUT NO longer," Poggi said. "I was closer to Jim Harbaugh over the last three years than anyone except his wife and kids. If Jim knew I would have known. I didn't know and neither did he. I stake my reputation on it. Stop whining and get a better team."
This isn't the first time Poggi's given someone a piece of his mind on social media. He famously went after an App State staff member who took exception to Poggi's comments about fan support at Charlotte.
Harbaugh is facing potential penalties from the Big Ten and NCAA after it was reported that Conor Stallions, a former Marine Corps captain who served as an analyst at Michigan, was running a sign-stealing campaign that involved recording other teams' signals from the stands, violating NCAA rules about in-person scouting. Harbaugh has denied any knowledge of the scheme and Stallions resigned amid the NCAA's investigation.
Poggi spent 2021 and 2022 as an associate head coach at Michigan, working closely alongside Harbaugh during that time. He was also an off-field analyst for Michigan back in 2016 before being named head coach at Saint Frances Academy in Maryland. He's in the midst of his first year as Charlotte's head coach.
