Charlotte 49ers DE Demon Clowney enters transfer portal

Clowney, the younger cousin of NFL star Jadeveon Clowney, was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2020.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte 49rs defensive end Demon Clowney will reportedly enter the transfer portal for his final season of eligibility.

Clowney's decision to transfer was first reported by On3's Pete Nakos.

Clowney, the younger cousin of Panthers linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, was a four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle. He signed with Ole Miss and spent three seasons with the Rebels before transferring to Charlotte in 2023. In his first year with the 49ers, Clowney had 33 tackles, including 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. He finished the 2024 season with 26 tackles and 2 sacks.

The transfer portal will be open for 20 days from Dec. 9-28 and again for 10 days from April 16-25, 2024.

The 49ers finished the 2024 season 5-7 and fired head coach Biff Poggi with two games left in the regular season. Athletic Director Mike Hill said it's too early in the process to say when the next head coach will be hired, but stressed the urgency of the situation because of the upcoming early signing period and transfer portal window. It's unclear if interim coach Tim Brewster is a candidate for the job after leading the 49ers to consecutive wins in their final two games.
