CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte 49ers overachieved in season one under coach Biff Poggi despite a 3-9 record.
The Niners were selected to finish dead last (14th) in the AAC preseason poll, and woudn up 11th.
But of course, Poggi wants more success in season two, and picked up about 30 new players on Wednesday's National Signing Day.
The most notable of them is a sophomore quarterback transfer from Florida named Max Brown.
Charlotte struggled at the position in 2023.
Brown showed some glimpses of a bright future while competing in the SEC, playing a close game against Florida State, and getting a lot of action against Missouri as well.
"He is a total program changer," Poggi said. "It's like saying you want an automobile and you get a top-of-the-line Ferrari. That's what he is. We did our due diligence on this kid. He is a great football player."
Brown's stats might not be too flashy, but he showed flashes of promise as a freshman.
"I would just recommend watching his YouTube film and watching any highlights, and you'll get an understanding of his game," 49ers beat writer for the Charlotte Observer, Hunter Bailey said. "They ultimately lost the game to Florida State, but you can really see that the kid can play. And dropping down to the AAC, he does accelerate that position and he's got three years of eligibility remaining."
