Johnson C. Smith University continue undefeated start to the season

The Golden Bulls are 6-0 for the first time since 1969.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina-based football team that might be enjoying the best season in college football so far this year resides in Charlotte's Biddleville neighborhood.

The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls are 6-0 after taking down Virginia State last weekend.

That's the hottest start for the program since 1969, the year they last won the CIAA Championship.

Former Golden Bulls QB Maurice Flowers is in his third year as head coach and has produced steady growth.

In 2023, the team played in its first bowl game in a decade.

This year the crowds are big, the players are local, and the wins are piling up.

"We sustain it by doing what it took to get us here," Flowers said. "That's being a good, fundamental football team and not starting to talk about or think about the last week of the season, the championship game. We can't put the cart before the horse. It's one week at a time and one game at a time."

JCSU is ranked No. 1 in the HBCU D2 Coaches Poll and No. 22 in the D2 Coaches Poll.

They are off this weekend, before hosting Shaw for homecoming on Oct. 19.
