CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tar Heels star quarterback Drake Maye will not play in UNC's next game, the Duke's Mayo Bowl.
The Charlotte native will skip the game played in his hometown to focus on the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
In a statement released on social media, Maye said: "Forever and always. Go Heels!"
Maye is expected to be one of the first quarterbacks selected in the draft after two full seasons as a starter in Chapel Hill.
The 2022 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Maye leaves college with 63 passing touchdowns to go along with 16 rushing touchdowns.
He completed 65% of his passes and posted a 154.1 career rating.
Maye is a native of Huntersville and played at Myers Park High School, before enrolling at North Carolina, where his father, Mark, also played quarterback, and his brother, Luke, helped the Tar Heels win an NCAA basketball tournament.
The Tar Heels will face West Virginia in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Dec. 27 at Bank of America Stadium.
