CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On an afternoon after school, Charlotte Catholic senior Will Hartman concentrates on his game at the Carmel Country Club driving range.
"Just try and get 1% better," he said, "and over time that'll build up."
But he's not preparing for a high school tournament.
This week Hartman is playing in the Junior Presidents Cup in Montreal before the pros tee off for the international event.
"I think it's gonna be awesome," he said. "Any time you get to put Team USA on your hat and play with some of your best friends. It's unbelievable."
Hartman is an unbelievable golfer.
To qualify for the Junior Presidents Cup, he had to be one of the 12 best boys golfers in the United States.
"I think we're going to be pretty good," he said. "It's all the best ranked kids in the world and we're all really good friends. So we're going to want to play for each other and try to win this thing. So it's going to be fun."
For Hartman, a golf course provides a sense of home, and a connection with family.
"I think playing with my mom and my dad once when I was like three or four," he said, "that was probably the first thing I remember."
The memories, and the trophies, have piled up, who also played in the Junior Ryder Cup in Rome.
But the name of the game has not.
"I just think it's try to have fun and do your best on every single shot and just have a next shot mentality," he said.
The Junior Presidents Cup is Monday and Tuesday. The main event begins Thursday and can be viewed this weekend on WCNC Charlotte.
