CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Wells Fargo Championship featured a special tribute to the four officers killed in Charlotte in April.
After Rory McIlroy's dominant triumph in the tournament concluded, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief Johnny Jennings arrived via helicopter to deliver the trophy to the winner.
"This tournament is something our department looks forward to each year and we appreciate the continued support of our law enforcement members," Jennings said in a social media post.
The PGA Tour announced a $125,000 donation to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation in honor of the four officers.
McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for the fourth time by finishing 17-under at the Quail Hollow Club. He finished five strokes ahead of Xander Schauffele.
The four officers were killed on April 29 in east Charlotte. Alden Elliott, Sam Poloche, and Thomas Weeks were serving with a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Johsua Eyer was with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Officers were serving a warrant when a suspect shot them. A total of nine officers were hurt in the incident.
