RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State quarterback Grayson McCall, who left Saturday's loss to Wake Forest after being taken off the field on a stretcher, was released from the hospital Saturday night and is in concussion protocol, Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said Monday.

McCall was injured while running the ball in a hit with several Wake Forest players.

McCall's helmet popped off, he fumbled on the play and lay motionless on the field as Wake Forest returned the fumble deep into NC State territory. Medical staff and football staff raced out to McCall even as the play continued.

Doeren, who has been coaching for more than 30 years, said on Monday that it was the "scariest moment I've ever had" in college football.
