CHARLOTTE, N.C. — We're now 12 weeks into high school football season, and that means another week of Friday Night Frenzy is here on WCNC Charlotte!
The WCNC Sports team heads out to key football games each week to bring you the best highlights and hits from underneath the Friday night lights. This week, we've got two games to show you which teams are fighting for hometown glory!
Game of the Week: Charlotte Catholic at Myers Park
Myers Park came in red hot, and ready to host a playoff game.
Hank Thompson immediately put the Mustangs on the board with a field goal to make it 3-0.
But Catholic responded with two Jake Anderson touchdown runs to go up 14-3.
Then the Cougars got a pick six from Rhett Teeter and suddenly, they were up 21-3.
Myers Park would tighten the game on the ensuing kick off, which MA Skanes took back 80 yards to the house, making it 21-9.
But Catholic, which is mixing together the spread offense with the Wing T, got a touchdown pass from QB Charlie Smith to Notre Dame-bound tight end Jack Larsen.
The Cougars win to advance in the 4A playoffs.
FINAL SCORE:
Myers Park - 24
Charlotte Catholic - 42
West Charlotte vs. Northeast Guilford
After a deep run in the 3A playoffs last year, the Lions looking to do it again in 2023.
Former Panthers coach and current 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, a proud alumni, was in the house for a strong defensive performance.
Sam Johnson crashed into the backfield for an early tackle for loss.
On the same series Michigan-bound linebacker Jaden Smith picked off the pass.
That led to points, as QB KD Smith receives the "brotherly shove" for the only touchdown of the first half.
West Charlotte pitched a playoff shutout, and will host Hibriten in Round 2.

West Charlotte - 21
Northeast Guilford - 0
