Team Preview: Phillip O' Berry Academy of Technology
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Berry Academy struggled on the gridiron in 2013. Despite defeating Harding to win the Battle of Alleghany, the Cardinals only managed two victories under head coach Andrew Howard. Fortunately for Howard, the team will return over half of their starters from last season's team. While the team will certainly need to improve, having experienced leaders gives the Cardinals an advantage mentally over many opponents.
According to maxpreps.com the defense gave up 384 points last season, while the offense only mustard up 259. Senior iron man athlete Kionte Cotton plays both quarterback and safety for the Cardinals. Coach Howard is looking for his senior leader to have a big season and improve on last year.
When asked about sophomore wide receiver Michael Phillips, Coach Howard had nothing but nice things to say about the young receiver. "He is a basketball guy, we expect big things out of him this year." At 6'4 he can definitely sky over the smaller corners and go get the ball.
The Cardinals open up the 2014 season at home on August 22 against East Mecklenburg.
