CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte's annual Duke's Mayo Bowl will have a January date for the first time in its 20-plus year history.
The 2024-2025 NCAA college football bowl schedule was released on Tuesday. The Duke's Mayo Bowl was among the games revealed, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
The Charlotte matchup is one of just four games that will take place in January that will not be part of the expanded College Football Playoff. Four of the six major bowl games, the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl -- will host the quarterfinals on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 before the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl host the semifinals on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10. The National Championship will take place in Atlanta on Jan. 20.
The Duke's Mayo Bowl has earned considerable notoriety in recent years for the tradition of dumping mayonnaise on the winning coach's head.
West Virginia defeated North Carolina 30-10 in the latest edition of the game.
All 22 previous versions of the Duke's Mayo Bowl -- previously known as the Continental Tire Bowl and Meineke Car Care Centers Bowl -- were held in the last week of December.

North Carolina has the most appearances in the Duke's Mayo Bowl but holds a rough 1-5 record. Virginia's three wins in the bowl game are the most of any team.
