CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UNC Charlotte is set to see an expansion for Jerry Richardson Stadium.
On Thursday, the UNC Board of Governors approved the $60 million project for the stadium, described as a Phase 1 expansion. University leadership said a state-of-the-art tower and boosted capacity are part of it, including seven new luxury suites, club seats, loge boxes, ledge seats, and general seating. The club level will also promise year-round use for team dining, as a meeting area, and as conference space.
This phase of expansion promises to increase capacity to 18,170 attendees. Phase 2 plans are already in motion, with the intent of increasing capacity to 21,000 as additional funds are secured. The university says a phased approach allows Charlotte Athletics to get the project going promptly while still fundraising for future growth.
"We are grateful for the private and public investments in this expansion, particularly from generous donors and the match from the NC General Assembly," said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber in a statement. "Their support allows us to pursue this ambitious endeavor, underscoring UNC Charlotte's dedication to providing a top-tier athletic environment for our students, alumni and the broader community."
UNC Charlotte said the enhanced facilities offered by the stadium expansion can attract opponents with regional and national fanbases, along with allowing the university to host competitions that bring in more visitors and expand economic impact.
