CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte could be the first stepping stone for this year's NCAA Men's Basketball championship team.
The Spectrum Center will host games during the first and second rounds of March Madness, the NCAA announced on Saturday. The Charlotte 49ers will act as the host of the games in the Queen City. Charlotte will host four first-round games and two second-round games.
Charlotte has previously hosted March Madness games in 2018, 2015, and 2011, among other years.
Greensboro typically got the nod as a host city because the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was located there, but with the conference's headquarters moving to Charlotte, the Queen City is even more incentivized to host some games.
The 49ers are making a big push to be selected for their first NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament appearance since 2005. Charlotte currently sits second in the American Athletic Conference, just one game behind South Florida.
The last time Charlotte hosted NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament games, March Madness lived up to its reputation with two huge upsets.
The UMBC Retrievers defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 74-54 to become the first No. 16 seed to ever beat a No. 1 seed in the men's NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina was on the losing end of the other upset Charlotte hosted that year. No. 7 Texas A&M pulled off an upset win over the No. 2 Tarheels 86-65.
The selection show for the NCAA Tournament is on Sunday, March 17.
