Major League Eating event coming to Charlotte

Joey Chestnut, defending champion of the July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Championship in Coney Island, N.Y., is bringing his monstrous appetite to Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Joey Chestnut, defending champion of the July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Championship in Coney Island, N.Y., is bringing his monstrous appetite to Charlotte.

The first-ever Major League Eating-sanctioned Roadstar Challenge is being held Saturday at American Burger Company in SouthPark.

The competition will feature several Major League Eaters, including Thomasville, N.C.’s Ronnie Hartman. Hartman is North Carolina’s most accomplished eater, ranked No. 25 in the world. Eighth-ranked Yasir Salem of New York will also take place in the competition.

Competitors will attempt to scarf down a massive 24-ounce burger that consists of four six-ounce patties, four slices of cheese, and sandwiched between two buns. The competitors will be vying for a cash purse that totals $4,000.

The professional round is currently scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. following an amateur eating contest.
