CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The proposed practice facility for the Charlotte Hornets is getting a big investment from the team's ownership group.
During a Charlotte City Council meeting on Monday, Hornets Sports & Entertainment (HSE) announced their intention to invest between $70 million and $100 million for the construction of a practice facility near the Spectrum Center. This change takes the city of Charlotte's investment of $30 million into the practice facility to be used for other projects in the existing Spectrum Center upgrade plan.
The new practice facility will be created at a site adjacent to the Spectrum Center. It would open in 2026, according to the proposal.
Improvements to the Spectrum Center have been discussed for nearly two years. In June 2022, Charlotte City Council approved a $275 million proposal to upgrade the Uptown arena.
HSE believes the new plan will save the city of Charlotte around $5 million.
The Hornets gave an outline for their renovation plans in January, which includes additional seating, improved concession stands, concourse enhancements, and more. Charlotte's Economic Development Committee will hear the proposal at their next meeting in March. The new terms will then be voted on by the city council.
