CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Hornets unveiled a refurbished basketball court at Druid Hills Park in north Charlotte on Tuesday as part of the organization's partnership with Lowe's.
The new court was made public during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday afternoon featuring Hornets players Grant Williams and Mark Williams. The event was followed by a Hornets Hoop Clinic for 50 students from Druid Hills Academy. Hornets ambassadors Muggsy Bogues and Dell Curry were also at the ceremony.
"Our goal is to increase the quality of our neighborhood and create a safe place for kids and families," Shelly Cayette-Weston, the president of business operations, said.
Upgrades to the court include a fresh purple and teal design with the Hornets logo at center court. The court also has new goal systems, as well as trash and recycling bins. Volunteers from the Hornets and Lowe's united in mid-October to prepare the space with cleanup and landscaping.
To mark the court's opening. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation hosted a free community event at the park from 4-6 p.m. with games, food and music.
It's the latest upgrade as part of the Hornets Legacy Project, which refurbished courts at Latta Park, Tuckaseegee Park, Camp Greene Park and Greenville Park. The project also focused on neighborhood improvements in Charlotte's Grier Heights community from 2021-23.
