CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is expected to become the next football coach at the University of North Carolina, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Wednesday afternoon citing sources.
Earlier on Wednesday, the University of North Carolina's Board of Trustees held an emergency meeting, where the board was expected to discuss a contract for a new football coach, WRAL reported citing sources familiar with the process.
The school had offered legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick the job, WRAL reported. At 5:30 p.m., the deal had been accepted, according to Rapoport.
Belichick, 72. won six Super Bowls as coach of the New England Patriots, but has no college coaching experience.
Board approval of a contract is a necessary step in the school's process of hiring a new football coach. The Board of Trustees could vote as early as 9 a.m. on Thursday to formalize the deal, WRAL report.
The Tar Heels fired 73-year-old Mack Brown on November 25, days before the regular-season finale against NC State. Brown coached UNC in that game, which NC State won.
