CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The ACC announced Monday that North Carolina and NC State were both fined $25,000 for a postgame fight between their football teams following the Wolfpack's 35-30 win over the Tar Heels.
Virginia and Virginia Tech were also fined by the league and all four institutions were given a public reprimand.
"The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the passionate on-field play between these institutions," the ACC said in a statement.
The incident started when a group of NC State players attempted to plant a flag at midfield after the game. Some UNC players took exception to the move, leading to a scuffle involving numerous players from both teams. Athletic directors Boo Corrigan and Bubba Cunningham responded to the incident with a joint statement on Sunday saying they were "disappointed" with how the teams handled themselves.
There were numerous fights at the end of rivalry games, including Ohio State and Michigan, Arizona and Arizona State and Florida and Florida State. Almost all of the incidents stemmed from victorious road teams planting a flag on their rival's field.
