Winthrop's Vega lost for season with knee injury

Winthrop coach Pat Kelsey says junior point guard Brandon Vega is out for the season with a knee injury.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Winthrop coach Pat Kelsey says junior point guard Brandon Vega is out for the season with a knee injury.

The Eagles first-year coach said the 5-foot-10 Vega will need surgery after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during an open gym session. Vega averaged 11.3 points and 6.4 assists last season at Snow College in Utah.

Kelsey also said Wednesday that senior point guard Reggie King would miss at least five weeks because of health issues. King has played 44 games for the Eagles in a backup role. He averaged seven minutes in 21 games last season.
