The University of North Carolina announced Wednesday that three-time national champion coach Roy Williams has signed an eight-year contract extension to remain head coach of the school's men's basketball program.
Williams' contract will keep him at UNC through the 2027-28 season and was part of 11 contracts/extensions announced by the university. Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham also announced a 10-year extension with UNC Athletics and Nike.
Williams led UNC to NCAA championships in 2005, 2009 and 2017. In 16 seasons at his alma mater, Williams is 432-128 and has won eight ACC regular season championships. The Tar Heels have made five Final Four appearances under Williams' watch, and the court at the Dean Smith Center was renamed Roy Williams Court after him.
"I'm grateful and humbled in the University's continued faith in my leadership of the basketball program," said Williams. "When I coached at Kansas my contracts with Nike and our media partner were private, and UNC respected and honored that for 15 years. However, times have changed and understanding the environment that college basketball faces now, Chancellor Folt, Bubba (Cunningham) and I agreed the correct and proper thing would be to disclose those terms."
