CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Believe it or not, there's some buzz online about the Carolina Panthers possibly parting ways with quarterback Cam Newton, saying it's best for the team to save cash and move on now.
Just to be clear, there are no reports on this; there are a few unverified accounts tweeting about it.
Many NFL teams could cut their franchise quarterbacks who make $20 or $30 million a year and save a lot of money. That doesn't mean it makes sense to do it.
It certainly doesn't make sense to do it with Newton right now.
Yes, he's coming off a second shoulder surgery, but he and the Panthers are very optimistic he will come through it okay.
Besides, those tweets are pointing to newly drafted backup Will Grier as the heir apparent.
Grier has to first compete for the number two spot with Kyle Allen. He's not there yet to battle Newton for QB 1.
Newton's current contract expires after the 2020 season, meaning this season, if he stays healthy, he'll get an extension to probably finish his career in Carolina.
If his shoulder breaks down again, then we'll probably start hearing actual reports of Newton's timeframe with the Panthers.
But we're not even close to being there yet.
