Carolina Panthers are the NFL's most miserable fanbase, study finds

It's not easy supporting the Panthers these days and a new survey revealed just how unhappy Carolina football fans are.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have the most miserable fans in the NFL, according to a new survey that examined fan happiness of every professional sports team in North America.

The survey, which was organized by Casino.org, found that 65% of Panthers fans believe there's no chance the team will make it to the Super Bowl. Their doubts are backed up by oddsmakers, too. The Panthers have the longest odds to make the Super Bowl at 300 to 1 on FanDuel. Ouch.

On a scale of 1-5 with a 1 being never and 5 always, Panthers fans feel letdown frequently with an average score of 4. Over half of Carolina football fans don't trust the team's management. The Panthers last made the playoffs in the 2017 season. That six-year drought is the third-longest in the NFL, behind only ten New York Jets (13 years) and Denver Broncos (eight years).

On the flip side, the happiest fanbases are Kansas City, San Francisco, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.

Panthers fan unhappiness, according to the survey:

  • 40% of fans aren't happy with the team's current players
  • 45% find game day expenses to be too expensive (tickets, merchandise, concessions)
  • 55% don't find game day experiences to be enjoyable

Panthers players reported to training camp in Charlotte on Tuesday. This season marks the first time training camp has been held in Uptown, ending the franchise's long partnership with Wofford College in Spartanburg. In its place, the Panthers will hold Fan Fest at Clemson Memorial Stadium, where the team played its home games during its inaugural season in 1995.
