CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn could miss up to six weeks due to a "significant" quad injury, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.
Chinn reportedly suffered the injury in last week's game against Miami. Chinn does not need surgery but he's expected to miss several weeks, according to Schefter's report. Schefter also added that Chinn is in the final year of his rookie contract. It's unclear if Chinn will be placed on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least four weeks.
To address Chinn's absence, as well as injuries to starters Vonn Bell and Xavier Woods, the Panthers signed Alex Cook from the Giants practice squad. Carolina started Sam Franklin Jr. and elevated Matthias Farley from the practice squad for last week's game.
Cook was signed by the Giants after going undrafted out of Washington this year. He started 13 games for the Huskies in his final year and was a team captain.
Carolina's bye week should give Cook time to acclimate himself to the team before they return to action against the Houston Texans on Oct. 29. That matchup will pit No. 1 overall draft pick Bryce Young against No. 2 selection C.J. Stroud. The Texans also have the No. 3 overall pick, edge rusher Will Anderson.
It will be the first game that offensive coordinator Thomas Brown calls the plays after head coach Frank Reich announced he would no longer handle play-calling.
