Panthers interview pair of Ravens coordinators for head coaching vacancy

Todd Monken and Mike Macdonald interviewed with Carolina virtually.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Baltimore Ravens top two assistants interviewed for Carolina's head coaching vacancy on Wednesday, the team announced.

The Panthers conducted virtual interviews with Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

Coaches currently employed by teams on a playoff bye week can speak to teams about vacancies. 

No in-person interviews can be done with coaches employed by other league teams until Jan. 22.

Carolina has also completed virtual interviews with its defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and interim head coach Chris Tabor.

Monken, 57, has helped Ravens QB Lamar Jackson to a strong season, and Baltimore has the fourth-highest scoring offense in the NFL, posting 28.4 points per game.

In his first season as Ravens defensive coordinator, Macdonald, 36, has helped the team allow the fewest points per game in the NFL (16.5).

Here are Carolina's known candidates for its head coaching vacancy:

Ejiro Evero, Panthers DC

  • Panthers defense allowed the fourth-fewest yards in the NFL in 2023
  • Carolina's defense allowed the third-fewest passing yards in the NFL in 2023

Chris Tabor, Panthers Interim coach

  • Took over for Frank Reich midseason, going 1-5
  • Solidified special teams unit over past two seasons

Brian Johnson, Eagles OC

  • Eagles finished 7th in points in 2023
  • Philadelphia was 7th in total offense, 8th in rushing offense

Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions OC

  • Played at A.C. Reynolds H.S. in Asheville before walking on as a QB at UNC
  • Lions offense has finished fifth in points each of the last two seasons
  • Lions offense has finished fourth and third in total yards, respectively, in 2021 and 2022


Todd Monken, Baltimore Ravens OC

  • Won two National Championships as Georgia's offensive coordinator
    Head Coach at Southern Miss from 2013-15 (13-25 record)
    Ravens are No. 1 in points this season, and fourth in total yards

Raheem Morris, Los Angeles Rams DC

  • Bucs head coach (2009-11), going 17-31
    Interim Falcons coach in 2020, going 4-7
    Rams are 19th in points allowed, 20th in yards allowed this season

Dan Quinn, Dallas Cowboys DC

  • Falcons head coach from 2015-2020, going 43-42 with three playoff wins and an NFC Championship
    Cowboys rank 5th yards and points allowed this season

Bobby Slowik, Houston Texans OC

  • Part of Kyle Shanahan coaching tree
    Coached rookie QB C.J. Stroud to a top-10 passing season
    Texans rank 12th in yards, 13th in points this season


Frank Smith, Miami Dolphins OC

  • Has helped lead Miami to playoffs in back-to-back seasons
    Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa leads the NFL in passing yards
    Miami is No. 1 in yards and 2nd in points this season


Brian Callahan, Cincinnati Bengals OC

  • Son of longtime NFL head coach Bill Callahan
    Bengals were Top 10 in points in 2021 and 2022


Dave Canales, Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC

  • Spent 13 seasons in various roles with Seattle Seahawks
    Helped lead Geno Smith, then Baker Mayfield to career resurgences


Mike Macdonald, Baltimore Ravens DC

  • Has worked for both Harbaugh brothers, serving as Michigan DC in 2021
    Ravens defense is ranked No. 1 in points allowed and 6th in yards allowed this season
