YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Several acres right off I-77, the land where the Knights used to play before moving Uptown is now in the running for the Panther's new practice facility or headquarters.
While the exact location is still up for debate, the team's expansion to South Carolina is becoming increasingly likely -- with York County benefiting the most.
According to the The Post and Courier in Charleston, one location the team is considering is the 80-acres right off I-77 where the old Knights Stadium and Hornets practice facility used to sit.
The report says the Panthers could model the site after the Cowboys massive practice facility, complete with offices, retail, restaurants and even residences.
The Post and Courier also reported talk of extending the light rail from south Charlotte into York County as part of the project.
We've learned that the Rock Hill Fort Mill area transit system has talked about the cost of a light rail extension down the 21 corridor. Estimates put that project at more than a billion dollars.
In early November, Panthers owner David Tepper told the media a new Panthers practice facility was coming soon.
Last Month NBC Charlotte reported that the Panthers radio announcer hinted about the possiblity of the Panthers' practice stadium moving to York County.
The 220 acres on the Carolina border near Carowinds could also fit what the Panthers are looking for.
We first reported in January about the Miller farm.
While Steve and Jim Miller confirm they're looking to sell, they told WCNC the Panthers have yet to reach out about the property.
The report also mentions that Tepper is an honorary co-chairman of South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster's inaugural committee to help move part of the team's operations from North to South Carolina.
WCNC has not received a comment from the governor's office, the Panthers, or York County officials.
