She spoke to WCNC Charlotte in 2021 about her experiences training for her first Olympics.

“When I got to trials and in 2019, I was super depressed I couldn’t have imagined that two years later I would be in a really good space,” Cockrell said at the time. “I couldn’t have imagined I’d be living this way because when you’re in a dark place, it’s hard to even think about what it will even be like when you step into the light.”

This will be her second trip to the Olympics. She was ultimately disqualified from the women's 400m hurdles finals for stepping on a lane line during the race. Cockrell had qualified for the finals after getting a finish time of 54.17 in the 400m hurdles semifinals -- coming in second, behind first-place finisher Femke Bol, who had a finish time of 53.91.

The Olympics officially kick off on Friday, July 26.
