Charlotte native Gabbi Cunningham is hoping to return to the Olympics with experience on her side

The former Mallard Creek HS and NC State star is back at the U.S. Track & Field Trials this week.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Once again, Charlotte's Gabbi Cunningham is running towards a spot on the U.S. Track & Field Olympics team.

Cunningham, a 100m hurdler, will run at team trials in Oregon on Friday.

The 2015 graduate of Mallard Creek High School ran in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, which were held in 2021.

Cunningham finished seventh at the Olympics.

As she approaches the 2024 team trials, Cunningham is coming off of toe and shoulder injuries and recently switched coaches.

But she has experience on her side.

"I'm keeping at the forefront that I have done this before," Cunningham said. "I have that experience. Of course, you're always going to feel nerves and pressure, but just remembering that I have done this before."

Despite her injuries, Cunningham thinks going back to a previous coach will help.

"He knows me, I know him as a coach," Cunningham said. "We know what we've done to get the job done before. Those little things form-wise, and tweaking small things has been what's been the focus."

Fellow Charlotte native Anna Cockrell, also an Olympian in 2020, will run the 400m hurdle race on Thursday.
