CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mallard Creek High School graduate Kaylyn Brown is going to Paris with Team USA after a strong showing at the Olympic trials this summer.
Brown, 19, was among six athletes named to the American relay pool at the 2024 Olympics. She just wrapped up her freshman year at the University of Arkansas. She posted the second-fastest 400-meter time in the U.S. this year and finished fourth in the Olympic trials to clinch a spot on the roster.
Brown has a career-best time of 49.13 seconds in the 400 meters. She won gold in the 2022 under-20 World Championships in the 4x400 mixed relay. The Charlotte native began her track career as a child, competing with the Sugar Creek Jaguars at just 4 years old.
Brown had a sensational debut year at Arkansas, running sub-50 times seven times in 10 races during the outdoor season. She won the silver medal in the NCAA 400-meter final, finishing second to teammate Nickisha Pryce. Her time of 49.13 seconds broke the world record for 19-year-olds, surpassing Germany's Grit Breuer in 1991.
Another Charlotte-area athlete is on the team with Brown. Livingstone College graduate Quanera Hayes is also in the pool.
