CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One of the world's most popular athletes visited Charlotte Saturday afternoon.
U.S. Women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe gave a clinic to kids at House of Soccer in Romare Bearden Park ahead of the evening's International Champions Cup match between ACF Fiorentina and Arsenal.
Rapinoe just won her second World Cup with the women's national team earlier in July. But she said this one is different than the last.
"How much it's gone beyond soccer," Rapinoe said. "People are proud and excited for so many other reasons. I think our team and me are incredible role models for how we should all be living our general lives."
Rapinoe was also aware that Charlotte is among the cities hoping to get an MLS franchise, and seemed to think the Queen City would do well with a team.
"I think the addition of an MLS and a (National Womens Soccer League) team would be incredible here," she said. "It's quickly becoming one of the premiere sports cities in our country."
