Charlotte FC flounders in Leagues Cup opener against Philadelphia Union

It just took one goal for the Union to win Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA — Charlotte FC was on the road again Saturday to face off against the Philadelphia Union again. This time, however, was part of the Leagues Cup and not the usual MLS match.

That being said, the match didn't go the way the black and blue wanted.

Philly striker Tai Baribo would score the first - and only - goal of the night just 33 minutes in, getting an assist from midfielder Dániel Gazdag. The first half closed without an answer from Charlotte.

Yet an answer never came. The most action that came after the break was substitutions by Charlotte and a handful of yellow cards to both teams. After 90 minutes of match time and another seven of stoppage, Philly walked off the pitch with a 1-0 win.

The loss doesn't kick Charlotte FC out just yet. They're back home at Bank of America Stadium to take on Cruz Azul from Liga MX for the next match. Kick-off on Wednesday, July 31 is at 8 p.m.
