CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An assistant on the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team has been tabbed to lead a new women's profesional team in Charlotte.
Phillip Poole was announced as the first head coach in Super League Carolina history on Wednesday.
Poole has lived in Charlotte for 24 years, and helped coach Charlotte Independence, Charlotte Eagles, as well as stints at UNC Charlotte, Wake Forest and Wingate.
Super League is a USL-founded womens pro league that will begin play in August 2024. Charlotte's squad will play at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
"The talent's always been here," Phillips said. "It's a hotbed. It doesn't make sense to me that it's taken this long in a city this big to put a professional women's soccer team on the map."
Super League Charlotte is lead by Independence founder Jim McPhilliamy.
"Philip has all the qualities and the perspective that will make him a great head coach for our team now and in the years to come," McPhilliamy said.
