Virginia wins Belk Bowl 28-0 over South Carolina

Event organizers are expecting more than 40,000 people to attend the festivities and game at Bank of America stadium.

The University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the University of Virginia Cavaliers will faced off at noon Saturday in the Belk Bowl.

Virginia came away with a 28-0 win over the Gamecocks in a match up of two schools with large local fan bases.

Event organizers said more than 40,000 people attended the festivities and game at Bank of America stadium.

Bad weather forced event organizers to cancel the official pep rally and Fan Central Friday night, but fans of both teams said the weather wasn’t going to dampen their school spirit.

“We were walking around the Epicentre trying to figure out what to do because we thought everything was going to be there, and then it was canceled,” said Barbara Ammons, a Gamecocks fan. “But it’s ok, we’ll make our fun.”

The Belk Bowl Fanfest is still set to go on as planned Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m.

The City of Charlotte started closing streets in the area surrounding the stadium at 9 a.m. Dec. 28. Streets closed in the area include South Mint from Morehead to 1st streets, West Stonewall Street from Church and Mint streets, and South Graham Street from Mint to Morehead streets. Streets will reopen Dec. 30 at 1 a.m.
