When son becomes subject: Langston and Trey Wertz

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A familiar site on a Friday night.

Langston Wertz at a high school basketball game in Charlotte.

"I'm lucky, it's been fun," he said. "I really enjoy what I'm doing."

For nearly 30 years Wertz has written about sports for the Charlotte Observer. He mainly covers high school sports and he's chronicled the careers of local legends like Steph Curry.

"I just loved it when I got behind the computer," he said, "fell in love with it."

But on many nights these days, Langston isn't a journalist -- he's just a dad.

"It's weird covering my kid," he said, "but I knew it was coming so I prepared for it."

But was he prepared for this? Providence Day's Trey Wertz is one of the best juniors in North Carolina.

He has scholarship offers from with scholarship offers from Clemson, Virginia Tech, Davidson, Charlotte, LaSalle, Old Dominion, Rice, Richmond, and Tulane.

And here's who's showing recruiting interest: UCLA, Georgetown, Butler, Georgia Tech, Providence, South Carolina, Stanford, Tulsa, Villanova, Virginia, Xavier, Harvard and Yale.

"I had no idea he would become as good as he is," Langston said.

Trey is blossoming in to a local, and statewide star.

"It's crazy to think my dreams are starting to come true, Trey said."

But as son became subject Langston and the Observer sports department had a decision to make.

"For us we thought it was better if I didn't cover my son," he said, "and I agree with it."

Langston still includes Trey in his nightly roundups, blurbs of the night's action. It's impossible not to because Trey is that good.

"To think that some people think I'm similar to those athletes he covered, it's humbling," Trey said.

Langston and Trey try and avoid any semblance of favoritism. Langston even reached out to perhaps the most famous father-son/reporter-subject combination of all -- NFL receiver Larry Fitzgerald and his dad Larry Sr.

"He said just cover him like everybody else," Langston said. "If he deserves it, give it to him, if he doesn't, don't."

The thing is, Trey often does.

"When I'm watching him and I'm not working, I'm a fan," Langston said. "When I'm working he's just another guy, and that's the truth."

As for following in dad's footsteps? Trey's more of a math and science guy.

"Me, I'm not a writer at all," said Trey, sharing a laugh with his dad. "He's a writer and I know everyone assumes I'm a writer, but I'm not a writer at all."
