When should AI credit sources? Americans divided on the issue: Report

Pew Research is looking at Americans' trust in AI and whether the programs should disclose their sources.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — About 54% of Americans say artificial intelligence programs like ChatGP need to credit the sources they use to publish information online, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

A much smaller share, about 14% of those surveyed, say such disclosures are not necessary. While about a third told surveyors they were undecided.

A quick breakdown of how artificial intelligence technology works: Generative AI programs work by reviewing large amounts of information, like the works of an artist or news organization. That's what allows them to generate quick responses when users ask questions.

The way it works. Pew says, is leading to lawsuits across the country.

On one side: people argue AI is taking copyrighted information and reposting it, without credit, as its own work. Others argue  the use of the materail is covered by the United States' fair use laws.

Pew's poll shows 75% of people surveyed want sources clearly cited if the AI is using a journalist's words nearly "word-for-word."

If the response generated is an image that imitates an artist, 67% of those surveyed would like to see the artist credited.

The new survey also finds 22% of Americans say they interact with artificial intelligence almost constantly -- or at least several times a day.
