CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The European Union has approved what would be the first framework of regulations regarding artificial intelligence.
A recent Forbes report broke down how the AI regulations would impact the United States, and the world in general.
These rules are coming out of the European Union, but they could have an impact on everyone across the globe.
First, the new rules could ban certain AI applications. That ban would happen if an application is found to threaten someone's rights.
Next, the regulations address AI's access to sensitive information. The report says even some medical devices can use AI, but new rules would restrict how much access AI has to that sensitive information.
The new regulations also say there needs to be transparency about how data is used, and would require human oversight.
Additionally, the proposed regulations address biometrics, which is something that can be used to identify people in public spaces. These rules would limit biometrics to only be used to find sex trafficking victims, prevent terrorist threats and to find people suspected of a crime.
Arguably, the simplest rule would require all pictures, video or audio generated by AI to be labeled accordingly.
While these regulations are focused on countries in the EU, it comes as at least seven U.S. states have proposed bills to regulate AI.
