New 821 area code coming to South Carolina. Here's where it will cover

New 821 area code will go into effect in 2024

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina's Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved a new area code for callers in the state that will go into effect in 2024.

The new 821 area code will be an overlay of the existing 864 area code that covers most of the Upstate, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and the surrounding areas. The 821 area code will only affect the assignment of new telephone numbers in that area. Existing users with the 864 area code will not need to change their phone number. However, all customers covered by the 864 and 821 area codes will require ten-digit dialing.

The PSC approved the new area code on September 27, 2022; the approval process record can be found on the PSC's Docket Management System website. See Docket No. 2022-141-C.
