Town of Cornelius stabilizes potential cyber threat

Some services provided by the Town may be temporarily unavailable until all affected devices are scanned and cleaned.

CORNELIUS, N.C. — The Town of Cornelius stabilized a potential cyber threat that was detected by staff on July 11, officials said.

The threat was caused by ransomware located on a town-owned device.

Cornelius officials were able to neutralize the threat by immediately removing the device from their network. This ensured that the ransomware didn't spread to more devices connected to the network.

Cornelius technology operations officials are working to scan and clean all affected devices with the help of the North Carolina Local Government Information Systems Association and Mecklenburg County Emergency Management.

The town will return to normal operation once all affected devices have been cleaned. Until then, some services the town provides may be delayed or temporarily unavailable.
