ROCK HILL, S.C. — According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 2.2 earthquake rattled the area around Rock Hill early Tuesday morning.
Around 4:02 a.m., the minor earthquake was located 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) north-northwest of the town of Lesslie, about 5 miles east of Rock Hill.
This is the first earthquake in that area in recent history, but there has been a "swarm" of over 100 minor earthquakes in the Lugoff-Elgin area of South Carolina since 2022. USGS lists that the largest earthquake in the Rock Hill and Upstate area was a magnitude 5.1 in 1916.
