10-year-old dies week after Steele Creek crash

North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that occurred in northwest Charlotte Thursday afternoon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 10-year-old girl involved in a crash that killed two other people has died, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

According to CMPD, Jaleyah Cordova, died Wednesday at Carolinas Medical Center as a result of injuries she sustained in a crash on June 29.

A little before 1 p.m. on June 29, officers responded to the 11100 block of Steele Creek Road in reference to a crash involving a tractor-trailer. When officers arrived, they found an International tractor and a Volkswagen Jetta were involved.

CMPD said the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as 32-year-old Ignacio Cordova, and the front passenger, a 14-year-old boy, were killed in the collision. The 10-year-old was taken to CMC with life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, according to authorities.

Investigators said the Volkswagen was traveling south on Steele Creek Road when the driver suddenly swerved into the lane of the tractor-trailer. Witnesses told officers the Jetta was passing other vehicles prior to the crash. Police said the road is not marked for passing in either direction.

Detectives do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
