Section of I-85 southbound reopened after crash in Kannapolis

While original estimates said the interstate would re-open after 5 p.m., the scene was cleared about an hour early.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Part of I-85 south in Kannapolis was closed after a crash Saturday afternoon.

NCDOT's DriveNC tool showed the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near Exit 54 to Kannapolis Parkway. The interstate was shut down in the southbound lanes with high congestion on the northbound side due to the left shoulder being closed for a mile after the exit to Polar Tent Road.

While NCDOT originally said the scene would clear up by 5 p.m., the DriveNC tool now indicates the scene was cleared closer to 4 p.m.

WCNC Charlotte viewer Jay Alexander shared a photo of the crash taken from an overpass. At least two fire engines can be seen blocking off the road. A Lowe's-branded box truck and Dodge Charger are also seen stopped, though it's not clear if either vehicle was involved in the crash.
